Vic: Bracks rules out rate caps

Victorian Premier STEVE BRACKS has ruled out capping municipal council rates despiteexpected rate rises of more than five per cent in most regions this year.

Mr BRACKS has told radio station 3AW that the government's opposed to capping becausethey inevitably lead to a bigger rate increase when the cap comes off.

He says service reductions are also a problem when an artificial cap is put in place.

Large rate increases are anticipated due to financial pressures on local governmentincluding a $113 million superannuation black hole.

Rate caps were in place under the former KENNETT government and were promised by theLiberal Party during the last election campaign.
