NSW: Public transport fares rise today

SYDNEY, Aug 31 AAP - Fares on NSW buses, trains and ferries rose by an average of fiveper cent today.

Under the new price schedule approved by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal(IPART), ferry tickets cost an average of 7.5 per cent more from today.

CityRail's increases were limited to 20 cents for a single fare, and $2 for weekly tickets.

The State Transit Authority was allowed to raise single bus ticket prices by up to10 cents, and Travel 10 passes by up to $2.

In Newcastle, bus and ferry fares rose by five per cent, on average.

IPART said no single ferry ticket would rise by more than 80 cents, and the biggestrise in Newcastle fares was 50 cents, for a Timeten one-hour ticket.

The tribunal said fare rises over the past two years had been small, and the proportionof taxpayer funding had increased because of rising public transport costs.

The pricing authority agreed to the modest rises to restore a balance between passengerfares and taxpayer subsidies to the cost of public transport.

"The tribunal has been diligent in its efforts to balance the funding requirementsof public transport with a range of issues including the affordability of fares and theenvironmental benefits of public transport," IPART spokesman James Cox said.
