Fed: Railway as important as Snowy scheme says PM

CANBERRA, Jan 17 AAP - The new Adelaide-Darwin railway would in the future be judged
as important to the nation as the Snowy River Scheme, Prime Minister John Howard said
today.

Mr Howard is in Darwin for the arrival of the first train on the railway, which is
expected to reach its final destination amid much fanfare today.

Thousands of locals were expected to turn out to meet the historic first train when
it pulls into Darwin's Port at 1.30pm (CST) today.
