The boy was walking east on Glenview Street in Paddington when the car pulled up beside

30s, tried to coax the boy into the car but the boy kept walking.

The late model white Subaru with black and gold plates with the letters LC at the start
was last seen travelling west on Glenview Street.

When faced with a crime as horrible as last weekend's mass killing in Arizona, it's human nature to look for a villain as big as the crime.

Before accurate details emerged about the rampage, in which a clearly troubled young man opened fire on U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, gravely wounding her, killing six bystanders and injuring 13 others, attempts were being made to put this act into a bigger political context.
Talk radio, the tea party and un-civil political discourse were batted around as contributing factors in the case even before the media on the scene could consistently report whether the shooter had acted with an accomplice or if Giffords was alive or dead.

Former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin came under particularly exaggerated focus for a graphic posted on her website before the election in which several contested House districts, including Giffords', were identified on a map with symbols looking like the cross hairs view through a telescopic sight.

Critics acted as if they had conveniently forgotten that "targeting" is a common metaphor used everywhere from business to the sports world, and doesn't connote a real threat of violence in a political discussion any more than it would to say a candidate "knocked out" an opponent.

It's one thing to decry a harsh political environment in which overheated rhetoric makes it hard for people to find common ground and reach compromise. It's another to accuse someone of accessory to murder, and before you do that, you ought to have a few facts.

What is emerging is a picture of the accused shooter, Jared Loughner, as a disturbed loner who has been setting off alarm bells from people who have encountered him for many months.

Attempts have been made to tie him to various political movements, including the one behind the white supremacist American Renaissance magazine, whose doctrines have some echoes in Loughner's diatribes.

But even a cursory review of the rambling Internet videos he made show that the structure of his thinking is so disrupted, the content of his speech - from his preference for gold-backed currency to his belief that the government is controlling our minds through bad grammar - is irrelevant.

What matters more than his political influences is that people who met him in the months leading up to this attack recognized that there was something seriously wrong with him and feared that he was dangerous.

Lynda Sorenson, who attended a math class with Loughner at a Tucson community college last June, reported to friends that there was a "disturbed" student who disrupted the class and refused to leave when the teacher kicked him out.

She wrote about the incident in an e-mail that was published by The Washington Post, saying, "Hopefully, he will be out of class very soon and not come back with an automatic weapon."

Loughner had multiple encounters with campus police and agreed to withdraw from school after meeting with administrators. He could only return after going through a voluntary mental health screening which concluded that he was not a danger to himself or others. Unfortunately, that's where it ended.

Despite the fact that multiple warning signs were noticed, it was left up to an obviously disturbed person to decide to seek help. Too bad the events that led to his expulsion from college could not have led to a more aggressive intervention, even one that took him into custody until he could be determined to be safe.

This is not a call to punish people with mental illness, who are much more likely to be the victims of crimes than perpetrators. But it is a reminder that some mentally ill people who need help won't get it for themselves and may need authorites to step in.

It may be good politics to try to pin this heinous act on an organized political group, but we may find that, this time, politics was beside the point.

Fed: DFAT investigating whether Australians on crashed plane

CANBERRA, April 13 Agencies - Australian officials say they are "very concerned" by
reports that a plane has crashed in Indonesia while landing at an airport in West Papua.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) said officials in Jakarta was seeking
urgent advice from Indonesian authorities to determine whether any Australians have been
affected.

The Merpati airline Boeing 737, carrying 103 passengers and six crew, broke into pieces
as it bounced off the tarmac at Rendani domestic airport in Manokwari, West Papua, on
Tuesday.

At least 20 people were injured in the crash with some taken to hospital with shattered
limbs and head injuries.

"We are very concerned by reports that a plane has skidded off a runway at Rendani
domestic airport at Manokwari in West Papua, Indonesia," a DFAT spokesman said.

"At this stage we have no information to suggest that Australians have been involved."

People who have concerns for the welfare of Australians travelling in Indonesia are
urged to first attempt to contact them directly.

If people are unable to make contact, they should call the DFAT 24-hour Consular Emergency
Centre in Canberra on +61 2 6261 3305 or within Australia on 1300 555 135.

Bad weather, including heavy rain and fog, were suspected of playing a part in the crash.

Witnesses said the left wing broke off as the plane hurtled into trees at the end of the runway.

The body of the plane came to rest with the tail section in the river and the cockpit
almost sheered off.

The plane was flying a domestic route from Sorong, also in West Papua province, to
Manokwari, a distance of about 340km.

The vast archipelago of Indonesia relies heavily on air transport but has one of Asia's
worst air safety records.

The deal went ahead despite the AFL on Monday scuttling an attempt by Richmond to place

Cousins has completed a 12-month ban from the AFL for bringing the game into disrepute

His return to the field is subject to a strict drug testing regimen.

Qld: Irwin family helps legacy live

By Gabrielle Dunlevy

BRISBANE, Aug 30 AAP - A year after Steve Irwin's death, his precocious daughter Bindi
is recognised worldwide as the new symbol of the conservation movement he so passionately
built.

But the Crocodile Hunter's legacy not only lives on in his immediate family, and it's
not even something that's in the blood - it's an attitude, a lifestyle, and it's infectious.

Australia Zoo, the family's Sunshine Coast wildlife park, hired 70 new staff in the
past year, bringing the number of enthusiastic khaki-clad conservationists to 549.

Tempting though it might be to avoid the hype on the anniversary of Steve Irwin's death
next week, the khaki army has vowed to treat it like any other day, and continue fighting
for wildlife protection.

September 4 marks a year since a stingray fatally speared its barb into Steve Irwin's
chest while he was snorkelling on Batt Reef near Port Douglas.

His wife Terri and children Bindi, 9, and Robert, 3, will spend the anniversary in
the seclusion of north Queensland's Lakefield National Park - the last place they were
all together.

Steve's father Bob Irwin, who started Australia Zoo in 1970, has also sought solitude,
and will spend the next three weeks at the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve, near Weipa on
Cape York Peninsula.

This week, the 67-year-old was awarded the title of Queensland grandfather of the year.

Steve may no longer be at his side, but Bob continues to pass down his affinity with
animals, daring skills and a desire to inspire others to his six grandchildren.

Most recently at the reserve, he taught Bindi how to distinguish a bush turkey nest
from a much more threatening crocodile nest.

With great care and patience, he taught little Robert how to fish for barramundi.

And with another grandson, James Muscillo, the 18-year-old son of his daughter Joy,
Bob trapped crocodiles for a research project.

Since finishing school last year, James has already donned the khakis and green fleece
worn by Australia Zoo staff, and will make conservation his life's work.

It's no wonder, with so much inspiration to draw on.

With Bob, James trapped the biggest croc ever at the research base - a monster almost
five metres long.

They dubbed it "Stevo", and in the exuberant fashion of its namesake it almost tipped
over the research dinghy when it was released back into the water.

James' father Frank Muscillo, Australia Zoo's general manager, says they know they
are part of an extraordinary family.

Frank met Joy Irwin, his wife of 25 years, at university.

She was studying environmental science - as one would expect from an Irwin - and he
was studying a science degree.

It didn't occur to Joy that she should forewarn her boyfriend about her father's unusual
affection for reptiles and burgeoning menagerie before she took him home to meet the family.

"It was interesting," Frank said, laughing.

"Joy just took it for granted.

"For someone new to all that, it was certainly an experience to become part of the
family and learn all about wildlife and all the things they were doing."

Frank can also recall his introduction to Steve.

"He was just a nice guy, a normal bloke," he said.

"It was a while ago now, but you just knew he was something special, you know, he had
that gift with the animals just like his dad."

Australia Zoo became a veritable shrine in the days following Steve Irwin's death -
a focal point for the grief of thousands of fans.

On the anniversary, Frank, James and the other staff hope to have a low-key day.

The Irwins have nominated November 15 for the first annual Steve Irwin Day, a celebration
of his life and fundraiser for conservation.

The loss of the larger-than-life character has no doubt left a huge void for the family.

But while the present grief is hard to deal with, the future direction for all of the
Irwin clan, and the extended family at Australia Zoo, is clear.

"We just want to continue all our conservation work that Steve started and his family
started, and it will continue through Bob and through all his family," Frank said.

"We will keep working on the conservation side of things forever."

Fed As army defends security, soldier is charged over guns

MELBOURNE, Dec 15 AAP - An Australian soldier has been charged over the discovery of
military guns at homes in Victoria, as the army defended its record of weapon security.

The Victorian charges follow unrelated reports rocket launchers may have been sold
to criminal groups.

Police say they are investigating whether rogue members of the army are behind the
blackmarket sale of rocket launchers and guns to terrorist and criminal groups.

NSW Police have recovered only one of nine anti-tank weapons they suspect have been
stolen from the army, Fairfax newspapers reported today.

Counter terrorism police overseeing the operation fear the rocket launchers have been
sold for use in Australia.

Army chief Lieutenant General Peter Leahy said he could not confirm that weapons had
been stolen from the military's stockpile.

But he stressed that great care was taken to protect the weapons.

"We take a great amount of care for the security of our weapons, not only when they
are stored, but also when they are moved," he told ABC Radio.

"We have procedures that have been established and we're checking those procedures
right now and that's really all I can say."

However, in a separate incident, a 53-year-old army sergeant from Tooborac, near Victoria's
Puckapunyal army base, has been charged with dishonesty and firearms offences.

The charges were laid after the sergeant was found in possession of Australian Defence
Force (ADF) property, a Victoria Police spokeswoman said.

"Police have located a considerably quantity of weapons and ammunition in the ongoing
investigation," she said.

The spokeswoman said the weapons were discovered at addresses in the Seymour and Benalla
areas and police were conducting further searches.

A spokesman for the ADF refused to comment.

He said the ADF was conducting its own investigation into the matter.

The man was bailed by police to appear in court at a later date.

New South Wales researchers have found most youngsters cannot tell the difference between
milk-based alcoholic drinks and milkshakes.

The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre surveyed 350 people between the ages
of 12 to 30 to determine which drinks appealed most to adolescents and young adults.

They also surveyed whether palatability changed with age.

The centre found under-age drinkers could not tell the difference between normal chocolate
milk and a chocolate milk vodka-based drink.

The findings have led to calls for a ban on milk-based alcoholic drinks and a reconsideration
